A few months ago, I helped fellow cartoonist, Dale Martin (of Watusi the Talking Dog fame) with customizing a set of his hand lettering for a custom (TTF) font. Here is his blog entry on the results.

The Des Moines Comic Book I-Con convention was a lot of fun. I have a number of drawings that people did for me to get the free book. Some even got MORE than just the free book because they'd put so much into it. I think this is a great way to get people involved. I may do this more with my own books rather than try to get people to buy them all of the time. I'm not good as a salesman, but I was able to coax a few people to draw something.

Not that I wouldn't mind people paying for my stuff, but I'm a mere independent with a real day-job, so I don't have any delusions that me sitting at a table for hours at a convention is going to make loads of cash. I guess if I sat and did drawings of Trademarked Superheroes® like a lot of other independents do, I could bring home a few extra dollars, but it somehow seems wrong for me. At least, until I really get paid by Franchise Comic Book Companies® to draw Trademarked Superheroes®.

Comic Book I-Con 2007

I'll be in Des Moines this Saturday for Comic Book I-Con 2007. I really enjoy this convention as the convention-goers all seem to really be into comics. Not just the famous ones, but comic books, in general. A good convention for an independent guy like me. I'll be staying Friday night at a hotel, as I can't do the drive-by-myself-early-in-the-morning thing. Really looking forward to it!

Young or old, if you're interested in being a comic creator or just want to learn more. Come on out! I know I wish I had this book when I was younger! Or even 6 years ago!

I hope everyone interested goes out to their favorite comic book retailer and has a chance to look at not only the FREE stuff, but maybe something that you've heard about or something that you liked as a kid. I'm sure there'll be loads of Spider-man stuff (there's a free Spider-man comic just for this special day) just in time for the movie. I see there's even a free Legion of Super-heroes comic based on the animated t.v. series.

My buddy Bill Hook will be out there as well as Dayton Ward and Kevin Dilmore, authors and co-authors of many Star Trek novels and short stories as well as many other projects.

I hope the weather holds for us. Forecast is for scattered showers. Hope they scatter away from us! Hope to see YOU out there!

Free Comic Book Day - Saturday, May 5

It's that time of year again! Free Comic Book Day is Saturday, May 5, 2007. I will be out at Pop Culture Comix in Overland Park that day starting at 11 a.m.

As I'm working on my current project, I don't really have anything new to show except for the first issue of Demo! from last October. But I will have a copy of TwoMorrow Publishing's Comics 101: How to & History Lessons from the Pros 2007 to give away to those up-and-coming talents in KC. I've only had a chance to browse through it, but it really looks like a good little "how-to" book.

I don't particularly like stipulations about the "FREE" in Free Comic Book Day, but rather than just giving it away to someone, just because it's free, I'm trying to come up with a way that I can see that they are really interested in the "how-to" part and not just the "gimme" part. Any suggestions?

It'd be cool if I had some local fans to come by, but my friends into comics will already be busy at their own local store or out at the convention. Yes, there's also a comic book convention here in KC that weekend. I may go out and browse on Sunday, but I'm focusing my efforts on FCBDay.

I've been spending some time lately fleshing out other characters in my story so they don't seem to just appear out of thin air. Although, as with a lot of comics characters, some of them can.

I've never done model sheets before and this was a good exercise, but I have a ways to go. Click here for my first attempts. Hopefully, they will get better as I go.
